BFT Lights WWI Flame of Remembrance

flame_retouchedBurner & Flame Technology is extremely proud to have played a pivotal role in the creation of a Flame of Remembrance at a major Cheshire landmark, specially commissioned to mark the centenary of the start of World War I.

The commemorative flame has been installed by the gates to Tatton Park, near Knutsford, which attracts more than 750,000 visitors every year.

Burner & Flame was asked to create a burner system that would produce a visible symbolic flame but be safe to operate in a public place. The team worked closely with the artist, local designer Alex Blakey from Macclesfield, on the project to ensure the safety and functionality of the finished installation were integrated from the start.

The team from BFT took on the internal design of the plinth and put in the gas control and actuator system, which allows the spark ignition to be operated from a remote location 30 yards away.

The glass panels have been created for their visual impact but also practicality, sized and situated in such a way that they will not get hot, even with the flame burning over time. The flame itself, produced using an atmospheric air burner powered by propane, can be varied from 6-14 inches in height.

tatton_flame_2The memorial was unveiled by Chancellor and MP for Tatton George Osborne at a poignant ceremony on 4th August, the date of the centenary. It was attended by serving members of the Mercian (Cheshire) Regiment and the choir of Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, among others. In a reflection of commemorative services taking place at the same time across the length and breadth of the country, the Last Post was played by a lone bugler.

The flame will now remain as a moving testament outside Tatton Park gates until 11th November 2018, the centenary of the Armistice that brought World War I to an end.

BFT Leads the Way in Flame Treatment of Plastics

tech_ringBurner & Flame Technology is proud to be at the forefront of manufacturing and developing flame treatment technologies. Plastics have an ever-widening range of uses in almost every field and, with 15 years’ experience and specialist knowledge, BFT is continually evolving its equipment and processes to meet clients’ requirements at every stage.

Why flame treat plastic?

Flame treatment has a vast array of applications within industry but for many of BFT’s clients it is a simple matter of being able to satisfactorily print or label brand or other identification information onto plastic containers (typically polyethylene and polypropylene). One of plastic’s strengths as a material – its resistance to chemical attack – presents a challenge when some form of painting or bonding is necessary. When applying a liquid to untreated plastic, it is usually clearly visible that it has formed separate droplets rather than given the even coverage required for strong, effective adhesion.

This is caused by the balance between the surface energy of the material, measured in dynes, and the surface tension properties – or wettability – measured in dynes/cm. To attain a uniform wet layer, the liquid’s dyne level must be lower than the plastic’s surface energy. Flame treating plastics alters their surface properties and allows this to happen.

How is this achieved?

A flame applied to the plastic surface at the correct intensity imparts oxygen into its molecular layers, thereby increasing the surface energy and raising the dyne level.

Dyne levels of untreated common plastics vary significantly (from the 20s into the mid-40s) so it is vital that the oxygen content as well as the volume and angle of the flame is suited to the job at hand. The team at BFT has a great depth of knowledge and experience at making the subtle alterations necessary for optimum results, as well as an extensive range of different burners and flame treatment systems to call and build on. Whatever the required shape and scale, high-quality equipment that will ensure a laminar flow flame without distortion is essential for effective application.

Which tool for the job?

BFT can offer high-intensity single-row, double-row and multi-port ribbon burners up to a length, dependent on individual customer requirements, of 1.5 metres. The company also has a comprehensive range of ring burners for efficient, consistent surface treatment of pipes and containers. The type of burner used within the ring is tailored to each customer and specific purpose, as is the ring configuration – fully enclosed or open to allow access. BFT has the expertise to create the right solution whatever the application.

Precise and safe control of the burners is always crucial when surface flaming, and BFT provides injectors and needle valves matched to the volumetric demands of the selected burners for ultra-sensitive control and a consistent flame at every setting and intensity. Additionally, burners can be supplied with or without continual spark ignition, which operates as a sensor/failure device, as required.

BFT Exports Flame Treatment Expertise to Middle East

ducabState-of-the-art Burner & Flame Technology flame treatment systems are making the 3,500-mile journey from the North West of England to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

When Dubai Cable – which is owned by the governments of Abu Dhabi and Dubai and has supplied cables for some of the most famous landmark construction projects of the past few years – needed advanced flame treatment technology, the company turned to BFT. With more than 15 years’ experience in developing and manufacturing precision burner technology, and the flexible processes and depth of knowledge to allow a tailor-made solution to each individual application, BFT was able to meet their requirements exactly.

Now systems created in Stalybridge for optimum performance, efficiency and safety will be utilised in the Middle East as part of Dubai Cable’s impressive and growing operation. The company supplies international customers in 40 countries and currently has three cable manufacturing factories, a copper rod plant and PVC compounding facility, giving a manufacturing capability of more than 110,000 metal tonnes of cables and wires every year.

Many applications call for a protective graphite coating to be added to the plastic surface of this cable – with insulation resistance testing, this semiconducting layer acts as an early warning system for any damage or breakdown of the cable before it reaches the main conducting cores, and allows operators at a new site to check the cable has been pulled and laid correctly before anything is switched on. To ensure the strong adhesion between the graphite and cable that will make this effective, the surface must be pre-treated.

Flame treating the plastic, and thus oxygenating its surface layers, is a highly targeted and efficient means of increasing its wettability and producing an area suitable for bonding. BFT has the capability to provide customised high-intensity flame technologies perfected for this role. The company’s extensive range of ribbon, double-row, single-row and ring burners in all sizes is complemented by the ability of the skilled team to adapt or develop any of these designs to suit specific requirements. Every surface treatment burner comes with BFT injectors and needle valves for crucial precise and safe control.

Dubai Cable has previously provided cables for the world’s tallest building, the Burj Dubai (now known as the Burj Khalifa), the futuristic Dubai Metro and the man-made island archipelago, the Palm Jumeirah. With the UAE’s incredible vision for the future, BFT expertise may well be found at the heart of some extraordinary and record-breaking projects in the years to come.

Modular Burners Helps Keep Fish on the Menu

Burner & Flame Technologies has revolutionised production at one of the UK’s largest and best known frozen fish companies with a major re-engineering project.

Staff and management at the Grimsby firm were becoming increasingly frustrated by the fish frying line, which was inefficient and unreliable. Whenever a fault developed anywhere in the process, the whole operation had to be completely shut down until it could be resolved, bringing production grinding to a halt and wasting costly time and money. With a vast output and the quality and freshness of its products at the forefront of the company’s ethos, such delays were potentially expensive and damaging.

BFT stepped into the breach with an up-to-the-minute six-figure refurbishment of the line, designing, building and installing a modern system incorporating modular burners for ultimate efficiency and control.

With maximum output so vital to the business, BFT was able to complete the entire project on site during a planned bank holiday shutdown, meaning no working hours were lost.

The company is delighted with the new system, which uses modern efficient modular burners and control technology for optimum performance and reliability, delivering the additional benefit of savings on fuel usage and running costs.
